Tower Hamlets Schools LED project

Energy and Climate Questions to the Mayor
September 2016: This month Mayor’s Question Time included the following:
progress on Energy for Londoners; schools and community energy; schools and solar power; cost to business of poor energy efficiency; renewable energy potential on TfL land and buildings; solar on London Overground land; energy efficiency and private rented sector; a discussion on Energy for Londoners; the London Sustainable Development Commission’s work plan; tube station lighting; carbon budgets; GHG emissions linked to London’s goods and services; carbon offsetting funds; cleaner, greener taxis.

London Community Energy Fortnight Events
August 2016: Community Energy Fortnight starts on September the 3rd, kicking off with a major conference in Oxford. A wide number of events are taking place across the country – including a good number in London, links to which are listed below:

Energy for London will helping at an event on 8 September with Community Energy England, Repowering London and 10:10 – initiating work for the launch of a new hub for community energy groups in London – Community Energy London. UK’s most sustainable historic building in London’s West End
22 October 2015: The Guardian reports: “Hailed as the UK’s most sustainable historic building, the Regent Street office scheme, 7 Air Street, comes with an ecological roof incorporating flowers, vegetation, grasses and habitats for insects, birds and bats. The building has received BREEAM outstanding rating, the highest award possible from the industry body which judges best practice for sustainability in the built environment.
“It features solar panels, low energy air conditioning, LED lighting and a unique central energy centre, powered by fuel cell technology, which saves around 350 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year, while providing power to 500,000 sq ft of commercial and residential accommodation on Regent Street, including the Cafe Royal Hotel and the 20 Air Street office building.“

Lighting London
April 2014: Interesting LSE Cities event: “With the arrival of LED and ‘smart’ technologies, lighting has become an increasingly important area of interest and concern for planners, architects and designers. Debates around urban illumination are driven by the global narrative of the ‘sustainable city’, but also specific aesthetic motifs, issues around safety and security as well as light pollution. Despite this centrality, light is relatively invisible….” How poetic… and how true. Gotta be worth going to!

Thermal Imaging of London’s skyline
7 February 2012: Daily Mail article on how “‘New thermal images show huge amounts of energy being wasted by UK firms” with pictures taken of “The skylines of London, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham as part of the Business Energy Insight scheme that will help firms with their energy bills.”
It’s not really clear how much these pictures actually reveal in terms of energy wastage – however above is the picture of London in case of interest!
Energy and Climate Questions to the Mayor
September 2011: This month the Mayor answered London Assembly questions in relation to: an estimate of the number of Londoners in fuel poverty in April 2012; the number of homes benefiting from the RE:NEW programme in each London borough; future funding of RE:NEW; an update on the Mayor’s carbon reduction targets; carbon savings associated with the RE:NEW programme; the Green Enterprise District; lighting at London tube stations; carbon emissions from the constituent organisations of the GLA; RE:NEW loans; the number of HCA funded homes built and their Code for Sustainable Homes rating and progress of RE: NEW for 2011/2012.

Energy and Climate Questions to the Mayor
July 2011: This month the Mayor answered London Assembly questions in relation to energy efficiency funding of Mayoral programmes RE:NEW and RE:FIT; an update on the forthcoming Renewable Energy Capacity study; the number of solar panels installed on London Underground properties; the amount of carbon emitted by the lights at Piccadilly Circus; and whether the New Bus for London meets the ‘Low Carbon Bus’ standard.

Millions to fund street lighting in Croydon and Lewisham
