Ealing Southall Climate Crisis Summit

January 2020: Good to see Ealing Southall MP Vivendra Sharma is organising a climate change summit on the afternoon of Saturday 18 January at the Dominion Centre, Southhall. The summit will be “discussing why we need fundamental change and how we will achieve it. Across panel discussions, group activities and Q&A sessions, we will also be hearing from those climate campaigners who are leading the fight against the ecological disaster facing us.”

Ealing Council is one of the 26 London local authorities (to date) to declare a ‘Climate Emergency’ – which was agreed at the Council’s April 2019 meeting. A July 2019 council paper sets out some immediate priorities following the signing of the declaration (appendices to which are posted here), and further actions are also set out in a Cabinet meeting paper of October 2019).

Local community group, Ealing Transition, has been hugely successful by working with Schools Energy Co-op in deploying a number of solar projects on schools across the borough, details of which are set out in a presentation provided to Community Energy London in September 2019.

Full details and registration details of the Ealing Climate Crisis Summit event are on the following Eventbrite page.

An invitation to the UK’s most Energy Efficient School Building

May 2014: Interesting news that the UK’s most energy efficiency school building is in Barnet, and was recently awarded winner in the ‘Non Domestic’ building category at the 2014 GreenBuild awards. Grasvenor Avenue Infant School is based on a modular building Schoolhaus design by UK Energy Partners (UKEP), which – as this ENDS case study sets out – was inspired by the James Review, which recommended standardised design and modern off-site building methods for schools. A standardised off-site construction processes enables big cuts in embodied carbon emissions in the production and supply chain and delivers a combined energy use and cost savings of 80% compared with traditional school buildings with a passive index-linked revenue from the integrated solar PV roof.

UKEP are organising a tour of the building on 29 and 30 May. Full details on how to register for a tour on UKEP’s website here.

Biomethane and Gas Vehicle Conference

April 2013:  The UK  Biomethane and Gas Vehicle Conference is being held at City Hall by the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Defra, the Transport KTN, Cleaner Air for London, the LowCVP and the ADBA on 5 June 2013. Free to attend, the conference will bring together 120 professionals from the AD industry, local authorities, government departments and agencies, supermarkets, fleet operators and those interested in the development of biomethane for transport to discuss a wide range of issues. Full details here.

The Mayor has recently stated that London as yet does not operate any biomethane buses, and highlighted the biomethane filling station in Camden, where he states that he is looking at the potential to increase the use of bio-methane and other low emission alternative fuels in London’s transport sector and would like other boroughs and organisations to install and promote clean alternative fuels and refuelling stations, such as what is being provided in Camden.” More on Camden’s York Way Compressed biomethane gas refuelling station here.

District Heating: The New Energy Utility

March 2013:  DECC launched its Heat Strategy at the March 2012 CHPA District Heating conference (see the DECC press release here). The Strategy highlights that up to 50% of buildings could be connected to heat networks by 2050. DECC are due to publish their policies and actions related to the Heat Strategy later this month and hence it’s timely that the CHPA are holding a follow up conference – District Heating: The New Energy Utility – on Friday 22 March 2013, where the keynote speaker will be David Wagstaff, Head of Heat Strategy and Policy at DECC.

Other sessions on the day will also include updates on the following issues:

  • The CHPA’s ‘Big Offer’, presented to DECC in November 2012, which lists out a series of measures that Government could take to boost the number and size of district heating schemes.
  • Finance is a key issue for district heating and there will be a session on how sources could expand with the industry in future.
  • On how Scotland is backing district heating through several government initiatives working to develop projects.
  • Information on an emerging  customer protection scheme for domestic customers on district heating.

The conference will take place at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Savoy Place, London WC2. Places are free to attend but limited, so if you wish to attend please  book early by emailing brian.mcguire@chpa.co.uk

Heat Conference 2012

November 2012:  Conference organised jointly by the Combined Heat and Power Association (CHPA) and the Energy Institute (EI) on Thursday 15th November 2012 at the Royal Society.
Heat accounts for nearly half of the UK’s energy use and associated CO2 emissions. To meet the UK’s target to cut 80% of greenhouse gas emissions based on 1990 levels by 2050, major cuts in heat-related emissions will be required alongside those in the power sector. All this in the context of rising costs, investment constraints and the need to deliver affordability to the consumer.
Full details at www.heatconference.co.uk. London local authorities can get a reduced ticket price to the conference by putting in the following promotional code when booking – ‘energyforlondon’.
Details of the Government’s forthcoming Heat Strategy, due for launch in March 2013, here.
