London Community Energy Fortnight Events

August 2016: Community Energy Fortnight starts on September the 3rd, kicking off with a major conference in Oxford. A wide number of events are taking place across the country – including a good number in London, links to which are listed below:

Energy for London will helping at an event on 8 September with Community Energy England, Repowering London and 10:10 – initiating work for the launch of a new hub for community energy groups in London – Community Energy London.  If you’re working on a community energy project, exploring a potential opportunity, or simply want to find out more information on the community energy sector in London, do come along!

Energy & Climate Change Questions to the Mayor

October 2015: This month the Mayor has been asked questions in relation to: the number of London projects awarded funding from government’s Urban Community Energy Fund (UCEF); minutes of the London Plan Energy Advisory Group meetings; helping reduce energy bills for Londoners who have electric heating; GLA loan to Tempus Energy; the impact of the closure of the Green Deal; minimum energy efficiency standards on London’s Private Rented Sector; support for the Governor of the Bank of England’s recent comments on carbon disclosure (and again) ; the FIT consultation and it’s impact on London’s solar industry (and again here); suppliers on the Mayor’s new RE:NEW energy efficiency retrofit framework; London Pension Fund Authority (LPFA) investment in the fossil fuel sector; projected returns from investments made by the London Energy Efficiency Fund (LEEF); planning approval of the Beddington incinerator; a health impact assessment for Beddington incinerator; London Plan requirements for borough planning carbon offset funds; London business risk and financial exposure to a ‘carbon bubble‘; climate sceptic views; Greenwich Power Station update; LED lighting on the Great West Road; production of BioSNG in London; tackling fuel poverty; the rollout of smart meters in London; supporting London businesses resilience to climate change; and an update to the License Lite process.

Three quarters of councils are switching off or dimming streetlights

22 December 2014: “Of Britain’s 5.7 million streetlights 558,000 now being shut off at night, an eight fold increase on 2010, figures showAccording to a major survey of the 141 of the 150 councils in charge of lighting Britain’s streets 50 have switched some lights off altogether, 98 councils have decided to dim at least some streetlights. Overall 106 of the 141 councils, doing one or the other, or both figures obtained by Labour Party from FOI requests reveal.”

London and Los Angeles Share Knowledge on Outdoor Lighting Retrofit

October 2011: As part of the C40 cities initiative, Ed Ebrahimian, Director of the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Lighting, came over to London to speak about a major public works project in Los Angeles to retrofit the city’s street lighting with energy-efficient LED (light-emitting diode) fixture – the largest LED street lighting retrofit ever undertaken globally. Further details of the talk are posted on the C40 website here which includes links to efforts currently being undertaken to increase the use of high energy efficiency LED lighting in London.

‘Smart’ London street lights to save power

27 July 2011Street lights that can be dimmed to conserve power are to be used across central London to cut energy bills and lower carbon emissions. More than 14,000 lights will be converted as part of Westminster City Council’s Smart Lights project.

Bromley acts to cut costs and carbon

15 February 2011:Bromley Councillors heard at their Executive meeting on 14 February, how investing in energy efficiency will help reduce costs by  more than £220,000 a year. Cllr Neil Reddin, executive member for Resources, told the Council’s Executive that as part of an invest-to-save approach, an investment of £500,000 in energy saving measures will help to control the increasing energy costs of council buildings and street lighting.
