Sharing information on emissions from Local Authority own estate and operations

13 April 2011: Letter from Minister for Energy, Greg Barker, to Chief Executives of Councils in England, on sharing information on greenhouse gas emissions from Local Authority own estate and operations. This is to help establish a successor to national indicator 185. DECC letter and further information on this data gathering exercise.

Millions to fund street lighting in Croydon and Lewisham

Islington Housing Scheme Wins Environmental Award

13 April 2011: Islington Council has become the winner of a national award for the second year in a row in recognition of their work to help reduce the carbon footprint and energy costs of fuel poor households in the area. The project, IssyClad, is the largest internal solid wall insulation programme carried out in the UK.  Read more on National Energy Action’s website.

Middle East unrest means increase in heating and hot water bills

11 April 2011:News release from Westminster in relation to the pricing of energy from their communal heating systems: “Tenants and leaseholders in Westminster will see increases in their heating and hot water bills of around a five pounds a week, council bosses have confirmed.This is because energy costs are rising substantially, spikes in global demand and ongoing political instability in the Middle East. Around 5,000 households with communal heating systems will be affected. The council and CityWest have written to all affected residents.

Energy strategy for White City OAPF

8 April 2011: The GLA and Hammersmith and Fulham council have issued a consultation on the White City Opportunity Area Planning Framework (OAPF). Included within the framework documentation, chapter 8 of the main OAPF document summarises energy issues and potential energy mitigation options that could be taken. A technical appendix (TA9) to the report goes into further detail on energy and should be available to download from the LBHF website.

Homes to be insulated around the Olympic’s site

The Health Costs of Cold Dwellings

7 April 2011: Caring for people made ill by living in cold rented homes costs the NHS £145 million a year, reveals new research launched by Friends of the Earth today. The analysis – The Health Costs of Cold Dwellings – carried out for  the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, found that 655,800 homes in England rented from a landlord or letting agency are so cold they are officially a health hazard, with a bottom-of-the-scale energy efficiency rating of F or G. A regional breakdown of the modelling is provided and suggests that some 82,000 dwellings in private rented dwellings in London are associated with excess cold. The estimated costs to the NHS of not treating these dwellings in London is just under £19m.
