‘London to test ‘smart city’ operating system’
May 2012: BBC News story reporting that “An operating system designed to power the smart cities of the future will be put through its paces in London. With partners including Hitachi, Phillips and Greenwich council, it aims to use the Greenwich peninsula as a testbed for new technologies running on the system. The OS aims to connect key services such as water, transport, and energy.”
Further information is available on Living Plan IT’s website which states “The Urban Operating System (UOS™) is the core technology platform that will manage vast amounts of data across cities and urban spaces and thereby facilitate smarter, sustainable and intelligent-living. This, in turn, will lead to more efficient use of energy and other resources, providing the basis for innovative services for residents, businesses and governments as well as new jobs and exports.”
Energy and Climate Questions to the Mayor
February 2012: This month the Mayor has been asked questions in relation to:
money saved through RE:FIT; grants available to tackle Fuel Poverty; the budget available to the RE:NEW energy efficiency programme; Carbon savings of ten easy measures from RE:NEW; Borough roll-out of home energy efficiency scheme RE:NEW; an Update on home energy efficiency scheme RE:NEW; the Mayor’s work with energy companies to eradicate Fuel Poverty; the number of homes in Greenwich under the RE:NEW programme; the number of homes in Lewisham under the RE:NEW programme; the number of homes under the RE:NEW programme receiving benefits; the age profiles of householders being treated under the RE:NEW programme; fuel poor homes treated under the RE:NEW programme; the number of public sector buildings treated under RE:FIT; the London 2012 Olympics – carbon reduction target; progress on Decentralised Energy; monitoring of renewable energy; the quantity of London’s Renewable Energy; RE:NEW cost and carbon savings; progress against London’s 2020 CO2 reduction target; and Climate change budgets.

Greenwich Peninsula Decentralised Energy Project Update
November 2011: Greenwich Council has issued a tender for services in relation to the construction of a district heating network across this major London redevelopment site. The tender states that “The Greenwich Penninsula Project is a major regeneration scheme involving 67 development plots. As part of this development and in support of low carbon initiatives a district heating system will be installed to provide heating and hot water to the development utilising low carbon energy technology. The scope of this enquiry is for the architecturl design of the buildings to house all the equipment including Biomass Boilers and CHP units.”

4 November 2011: Brief case studies of three new public sector buildings installing PV:
Woolwich Civic Offices
Elm Park Library in Havering, and
Wembley’s Chalkhill Primary School
London schemes through to the next round of ‘energyshare’
12 August 2011: British Gas and River Cottage’s energyshare initiative have today announced the ‘longlist’ of 100 community renewable energy projects bidding for support from the initial £500,000 energyshare fund. Only seven London schemes are in this list of 100 projects and links to their project descriptions can be found below:
Ham Hydro – the installation of hydro power turbines on the River Thames at Teddington Weir
PETRA – green refurbishment of tower blocks to best practice standards of energy and water efficiency and generate renewable energy
SPACE_Solar – the installation of a large solar array on a new artist studio building in Peckham
All Souls Solar – installation of a solar array on All Souls Church in St Margarets, Isleworth
Glyndon Community – a scheme to make part of Plumstead-based Glyndon community centre’s energy consumpution come from renewable sources
Hackney City Farm
Hyde Farm Climate Action Network – Supporting ongoing energy saving projects on the Hyde Farm estate in Balham.
Further funding of £2m will be supplied for future bidding rounds by British Gas – much more information on energyshare can be found on their website.

District Heating Good Practice: Learning from the LCIF
August 2011: Two London schemes are profiled in the Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA) Low Carbon Infrastructure Fund (LCIF) programme ‘lessons learned’ report published today. The Fund was set up in 2009 to provide funding for the district heating infrastructure needed to link housing schemes to new and existing low carbon CHP plants.
- LCIF funding provided £3m to develop the spine heat network for the Greenwich Peninsula. The Greenwich Peninsula, with its proposals for more than 10,000 new homes, is part of a larger, mixed-use scheme including commercial, retail, educational and leisure uses. The full combination of works includes two significant CHP pipework ‘spines’ which capture all significant development areas on the Peninsula
- Cranston Estate, Hackney where £0.5m grant funding was provided to install a district heat pipe for the retrofitting of a CHP plant, providing electricity and heat to three high-density housing estates.

Greenwich Climate Change Strategy Published
8 March 2011: Greenwich Council’s climate change strategy was launched today which includes a detailed action plan with initiatives ranging from reviewing the potential for a borough-wide heat/CHP network, strong support for a range of renewable technologies, installation of smart meters, regular energy audits amongst many other well thought out proposals.
